BUOYS is an artist's book by Mary Crenshaw, featuring poems by Edre Emma Roper-Evans which Gate 44 curated the print and design production.

The book is handcrafted using an accordion binding technique with custom cover shapes cut using flatbed technology. The book's shape represents a hand and a foot and was screen-printed varying the color scheme, the the interiors are printed using the screen-printing monotype technique. Each book is embellished with eyelets and shoestrings.

Mary Crenshaw is a multidisciplinary american artist who live and works in Milano.

“I work across disciplines in painting, drawing and sculpture. Immediacy features in all of my work and is rooted in Eastern philosophical notions of force and energy, as opposed to the way of thinking about strength in Western culture. Sinologist François Jullien declares that the Chinese have no concept of soul, but that of a vital, distinctive life-force. Jullien describes how instead of Western ideas of suffering and endurance, Eastern convictions include flexibility and awareness. This is the kind of energy I aspire to convey to the viewer.” (Mary Crenshaw)
